Have you visited the 'new' ChemE Headquarters, Executive Office and Graduate Student Offices recently? The three offices underwent redesign and renovation during the latter part of June, and you are most welcome to appraise the results. Thanks to the recognition by Professors Armstrong and Cooney of outdated work spaces and their generosity of spirit, the department employed interior designer Christina Oliver, who had done a beautiful, but simple, job of re-designing Professor Armstrong's office when he became Department Head in 1996.
Four of the HQ and Graduate Student Office staff relocated to the second floor graduate student space for three weeks while Professor Cooney relocated to France where he could be found atop Mt. Blanc, perhaps a rather drastic move for such a venture, but well in keeping with his previous mountain-climbing escapades. Contrary to everyone's expectations, the work was accomplished on time, so that everyone was able to move back during the first week in July, just as Professor Cooney was returning from Mt. Blanc. Minor touches are still taking place.
Although Elaine, Janet, Patsy and Emmi warmed to their 'hidden' space on the 2nd floor, and their neighbor graduate students reportedly enjoyed the more 'social' nature of the short-term visitors, the HQ and Graduate Student Office staff are delighted to be settling into their new, much more functional spaces.
Special kudos go to Steve Wetzel, Peter Maloof, Calvin Castor and Greg Sands, Kudzai Takavarasha, Brendon Cooney, Hala Qanadilo and James Thompson who so smoothly handled the move out, the move back, the computers, and the phones, to say nothing of the multiple personalities involved in this endeavor.
Joining the ASO as our new Personnel Administrator will be Eminia Piccinonno, an MIT veteran with eleven years of experience here, in both the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) and in MIT's central Personnel Office.
Ms. Piccinonno is replacing Maria Franco, who is leaving as of August 20th to pursue a career in early childhood education.
We look forward to having Eminia join us and hope you will help welcome her into our community!
We've decided on a change of venue for this year, and have secured the East Campus BBQ pits and the adjoining Volleyball courts. These are right next door, so it should be easy to head on over after work. Now for the details:
When: 4-7 p.m. on Friday, August 13
Where: East Campus BBQ Pits + Volleyball Courts (right next to Building 66)
We'll have traditional BBQ stuff, plus accomodations for our vegetarian members, so come on down next Friday for some summer socializing. Hope to see you all there!
