Department Staff

Dreyfus BuildingThe Department of Chemistry is located in the Dreyfus Building (Building 18), the Eastman Laboratory (Buildings 2, 4, and 6), and the Dorrance and Whitaker Buildings (Buildings 16 and 56) which surround the Eastman Courtyard.

A permanent professional staff, including two PhDs, provides training, repair, and assistance to the users of the Department of Chemistry's Instrumentation Facility (DCIF). The DCIF maintains a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art instrumentation including seven NMR spectrometers (300 to 600MHz), an EPR spectrometer, a high resolution FT-MS operating with a 4.7 tesla superconducting magnet, a MALDI-TOF MS, a GC-MS, a polarimeter, and a FT-IR spectrometer.

The Department X-Ray Diffraction Facility provides x-ray structural analysis for researchers in the department. All experiments are carried out using a Bruker SMART/CCD, three-circle, platform diffractometer.

The Francis Bitter Magnet Laboratory and Center for Magnet Resonance located in Building NW14 has several high field NMR and EPR spectrometers available for collaborative and service research. These instruments include two 500MHz, two 600MHz, one 700MHz and two 750MHz spectrometers. A 900MHz spectrometer will arrive in 2005.

The Biophysical Instrumentation Facility houses instrumentation for aiding in the elucidation of macromolecular structure and interaction. Users can be trained in the use of a Beckman XL-I analytical ultracentrifuge, an Aviv Model 202 circular dichroism spectrometer, a MicroCal VP-ITC isothermal titration calorimeter, a MicroCal VP-DSC differential scanning calorimeter, a Dyna-Pro Titan dynamic light scatterer and a Perkin-Elmer HTS 7000 fluorescence plate reader.
