Undergraduate chemistry majors can obtain a strong background in biochemistry by completing an American Chemical Society-certified (ACS) biochemistry program based on an introductory biological chemistry subject (5.07), an advanced biological chemistry subject (5.08), a biology laboratory subject (7.02) and genetics (7.03). In addition, subjects are available at both the undergraduate and graduate level in related areas such as bioorganic and bioinorganic chemistry, enzymatic reaction mechanisms, protein and peptide chemistry, biotechnology, nucleic acid biochemistry, and protein structure. The specific requirements for ACS certification in biochemistry are outlined below. In combination with the subjects required for the chemistry major, these subjects lead to a S. B. degree in Chemistry with ACS certification in biochemistry. This program provides an excellent background for graduate study, medical school, or for the pursuit of a career immediately after graduation.
