Successful chemists must be able to communicate to others the purpose and content of their work. Writing and speaking skills should be an integral part of a chemist's professional training. The Institute Communication Requirement aims to provide chemistry majors with substantial instruction and practice in both expository writing and speaking within the professional forms of the chemical discipline. Chemistry Majors fulfill the CI-M portion of the Communication Requirement by completing both the 5.36 and 5.38 laboratories. Instructors from the MIT Program in Writing work with the 5.36 and 5.38 faculty, staff, and students to provide instruction and evaluation on the communication components of the laboratories. In Chemistry 5.36, the requirement is met through the preparation of a scientific literature review article and laboratory reports, and through an oral presentation of experimental results. In Chemistry 5.38, the requirement is met through the preparation of scientific reports, oral presentations of experimental results, and the preparation and delivery of a poster presentation. |
