The department extends its congratulations to Prof. Hanno zur Loye and his wife Dee Hull on the birth of their son, Karl Dietrich, who arrived on Thursday, 6/1/95 at 7:30 AM. Karl weighed in at 8 lbs. 5 oz., 20" tall, with blonde hair and blue eyes. Unbiased observers describe him as "very cute and very sweet."
Breast Cancer Research Funding
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is funding breast cancer research in the state. Doctoral candidates, postdoctoral fellows, and assistant professors are eligible. Recipients must be US citizens and Massachusetts residents. Projects will run from January 2, 1996 through December 31, 1996, and research disciplines may include etiology, epidemiology, risk analysis, diagnosis and treatment. For an application, call Patricia Brennan at 617/727-7222 or write MA Dept. of Public Health, Women's Health Unit, 150 Tremont Street, 3rd Floor, Boston, MA 02111. Proposal deadline is September 15, 1995.
UNDERGRADUATE OPPORTUNITIES
For more information on the opportunities listed below, please check with the Chemistry Education Office in Room 2-325.
Positions Available
- RHG Inc., New York, NY is a consulting firm searching for a multilingual (preferably Korean, Japanese, German, or Slavic) recent graduates with bachelor's degrees in chemistry or chemical engineering for a full time, associate level consulting position. Opportunity for overseas travel.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
For more info on the opportunities listed below, please check the blue binders in Headquarters.
Positions Available
- University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT is inviting applications for the position of Surface Science & Optical Spectroscopy Senior Engineer to operate and maintain the nascent Surface Analysis and Optical Spectroscopy Facility in the Chemistry Department.
- Applied Materials, Santa Cruz, CA has openings in the New Product Development group of the Metal Etch division. Candidates should have an MS or Ph.D. and a high GPA. The jobs are very hands-on and involve new equipment set up and experiments design. Knowledge in the areas of laser spectroscopy, molecular beam, and gas-phase surface kinetics is preferred.
Faculty Positions
- The University of Nottingham, Nottingham, England. Applications are invited for a Lectureship in the Department of Chemistry available from 1st October 1995. Applicants should have a strong research record in an area of Theoretical Physical Chemistry and be prepared to contribute to a broad teaching programme in Physical Chemistry. Current research interests in the Department include Surface and Interface Science, Molecular Photofragmentation Dynamics and Spectroscopy, Astrophysical Chemistry, Solid State NMR and Materials Chemistry; overlap with one or more of these areas would be particularly appropriate.
Postdoctoral Positions
- Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, TN Dr. Edward G. Hagaman has an immediate opening for a solid state NMR spectroscopist in his NRM program in the Physical Organic Chemistry Group of the Chemical and Analytical Sciences Division at Oak Ridge.
- Michigan State University, East Lansing , MI. A two year (one year, renewable for one year) postdoctoral fellowship is available, starting in July 1995, in the laboratory of Marcos Dantus. Topic: Femtosecond Spectroscopy of High Energy Chemical Reactions.
- Research School of Chemistry, Australian National University, Canberra. Dr. Michael A. Collins has two postdoctoral positions available in theoretical chemical physics in his chemical dynamics group later this year. The group is interested in a number of aspects of molecular motion and chemical reaction dynamics.
- Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. Prof. Melissa A. Hynes has an immediate opening in her laboratory, working on the identification and characterization of the chemical mechanisms that control the evolution of surface morphology during etching. The project addresses fundamental issues of surface reactivity, our investigations are directly relevant to silicon processing technology. She is particularly interested in hiring a candidate with prior experience in scanning probe microscopy.
- Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH. Prof. Alfred B. Anderson has an immediate opening in his research group working on surface science, modeling the potential dependence of electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol on platinum alloy surfaces.
