A New Arrival!!
The Chemistry Department extends their congratulations to Eve Diana and John Murdzek (Ph.D.'88) on the birth of their son Julian Naftali Murdzek who arrived seven weeks early on November 10th at 2:24 a.m. weighing in at 3 lbs. and 5 ounces. Julian has blond hair and blue eyes, his mother reports he is gaining weight, is full of energy, and will be able to go home soon.
Faculty Positions
- Visiting Professors at Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA: invites applications for two temporary faculty openings; one for one year and one for one semester, any field of chemistry, however, preference will be given to physical chemists. Teaching responsibilities will include lectures and laboratories in either introductory chemistry, physical chemistry, and or more advanced chemistry courses.
- Fort Lewis College, Durango, CO: has a tenure-track opening for fall of 1996 in the area of inorganic chemistry. The applicant should have a strong synthetic and instrumentation background.
- Brandeis University, Waltham, MA: Seeks a Lecturer in General Chemistry for the Spring semester of 1996. The instructor will work with the approximately 50 students who started the course in the Fall of 1995. To adequately prepare the students for the subsequent course in Organic Chemistry, the instructor is expected to offer adequate office hours as well as three classes per week. A TA will be responsible for recitation sections. It is preferred that the instructor continue the use of demonstrations in class presentations.
- Stetson University in DeLand, Florida: Invites applications for a tenure-track position jointly held between the Biology and Chemistry Departments. The successful candidate will hold the Ph.D. in biochemistry or a related discipline and will be expected to teach two courses per semester and develop a research program.
Postdoctoral Positions
- Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico: The laboratory of Dr. Douglas A. Loy is searching for a postdoctoral appointee. The group's research interests are synthesis of new organosilicon monomers and their sol-gel polymerization to afford "hybrid organic-inorganic materials," synthesis and characterization of polysilanes. fullerence chemistry and polymers, and the formation of phosphaacetylene polymers.
- Loyola University, Chicago, Illinois: A post-doctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Ken Olden to study the development of multilinked hemoglobins as potential blood substitutes. Multilinking reagents are designed using computer graphics to react with specific sites on the hemoglobin tetramer to change its stability and oxygen affinity in a predictable way.
- Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO: seeks applicants for a postdoctoral position in theoretical chemical physics. Details will depend on background and interests, but will involve the statistical mechanics of liquids, solids or molecular clusters.
- Tufts University, Medford, MA: A postdoctoral position in laser-induced fluorescence is available immediately. The position involves the deployment of a laser/fiber optics instrument in a cone penetrometer vehicle to perform in situ measurements of subsurface contamination at hazardous waste sites. The project is funded by EPA, and the position is for one year with possible extension on related projects. Please send c.v. and arrange to have two letters of recommendation sent to Associate Professor Jonathan E. Kenny, Department of Chemistry, Tufts University, Medford, MA 02155. Call for more information at 617-627-3397.
- Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana: Invites applications for a postdoctoral associate beginning in January of 1996. The focus is the exploration of the structure and dynamics of model two dimensional systems. Please contact Professor George E. Ewing at ewingg@indiana.edu
Fellowship Opportunities
- Wililams College, Williamstown, MA: announces the Gaius Charles Bolin Fellowship for Minority Graduate Students for 1996-97. The Bolin Fellowships enable two minority graduate students to devote the bulk of their time during the academic year to the completion of dissertation work.
- The University of Georgia in Athens, GA: announces this year's competition for the Abraham Baldwin Graduate Fellowships in Chemistry. These fellowships are awarded to students showing unusual promise for graduate research in any area of chemistry. Baldwin Fellowships, which cover the first two years of graduate work, carry an annual stipend of $17,000, include a full waiver of tuition and require half of the normal teaching loads.
