President of National Academy of Sciences to Speak May 31st
The president of the National Academy of Sciences, Dr. Bruce M. Alberts, will discuss "Science Education as a Wedge for Revitalizing our Nation's Schools" at 4pm on May 31 at the Museum of Science Cahners Theater.
His talk, the latest presentation in the Forum on Public Education will touch on topics of concern to everyone with a stake in education-teachers, students, parents, professors, admissions officers, employers. The forum, a collaboration between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Council on Primary and Secondary Education and the Museum of Science, seeks to bring the public together with local and national education leaders.
Dr. Alberts, a biochemist widely noted for his study of the protein complexes that allow a living cell to replicate chromosomes during cell division, is a graduate of Harvard and was chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California-San Francisco before taking on the leadership of the NAS.
New Chemistry Librarian Appointed
Dr. Heahyun Yoo has been appointed to the position of Assistant Engineering and Science Librarian for Chemistry effective 1 February 1996. Heahyun holds the B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Inha University (Incheon, Korea) and the M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemistry from Seton Hall University. Her library degree is from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Her library experience includes an internship at the Mt. Sinai Medical Center Health Science Library and duty as Librarian of Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center's Hibbs Medical Library of New York Orthopaedic Hospital. Prior to her library career, Heahyun worked as a Preclinical Research Scientist for Perstorp Pharma, Lund, Sweden where she investigated pharmacokinetical properties of various drugs and their derivatives. She is a member of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Society for Information Science.
The Chemistry Librarian is responsible for the MIT Libraries' collections in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and provides reference services and literature searching for MIT students, faculty and researchers. Cambridge TeenWork Summer Jobs Program
Do you have a summer job available for a teen? Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School students age 16 and older will be available for summer work approximately eight to ten weeks beginning July 1, 1996. Vacancies on the Chemical Hygiene/Safety Committee
Graduate students interested in joining the Chemistry Department Chemical Hygiene and Safety Committee are invited to submit their names to Professor Rick Danheiser (18-297; danheisr@mit.edu). Members of the Committee participate in inspections of department laboratories (approximately one inspection per month) and attend meetings (ca. 2 per year) to discuss and formulate Chemistry Department safety policy. No prior experience in safety-related matters is necessary.
