Congratulations to Professor Bruce Tidor Named as an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow!

Professor Bruce Tidor has been awarded an Alfred P. Sloan fellowship. The two-year fellowships are awarded to young faculty members who have demonstrated great research potential in the physical sciences, economics, mathematics and neuroscience. The Sloan Research Fellowships were first established in 1955 to provide support and recognition to young scientists who were endeavoring to set up laboratories and establish their independent research projects with little or no outside support.

Sloan Research fellows are chosen from a highly competitive field of scientists from across the country - the selection of Professor Tidor clearly indicates the high esteem in which his past work and future potential is held by his fellow scientists.

Chemistry Renovations Update

By Marc B. Jones

The renovations of the new X-Ray lab are complete and the lab and Bill Davis have moved into the space. The new lab is located on the 3rd floor of building 2 in the space formerly occupied by the Chemistry Education Office. The new X-Ray facility contains separate rooms for the diffractometer, computers, and Bill Davis' office.

Please take a moment and visit the new facility. I believe that you will find it more spacious, efficient and pleasant then the facility's former quarters.

1999 Merck/MIT Graduate Fellowships Available

Graduate fellowships are available through the MIT/Merck Collaboration Program for students with a strong background in math, physical sciences, and/or engineering while doing graduate studies in sub-sections of a department of engineering, physical or mathematical sciences. Doctoral students beginning their second, third or fourth years of graduate studies are eligible. Students selected will be required to take one course in biology or related science each of the two semesters of the first year of support and to participate in a symposium held typically on the MIT campus to discuss research before Merck representatives and MIT colleagues. To apply send your undergraduate transcripts, GRE's GPA, MIT course record, and prepare eight copies of: a two page description of the research proposed and two letters from MIT faculty of whom is your supervisor to Professor Dietmar Seyferth in 4-382A by April 1, 1999. Chemistry Department faculty will review applications and send on those most qualified. Please contact Professor Boris Kagasanik, 253-2637, HYPERLINK mailto:bmag@mit.edu bmag@mit.edu. with questions. Information may also be obtained from Professor Bonnie Berger, Math; Tomas Lozano.

Cheer on the Chemistry Hockey Teams

The spring semester schedules for the Chemistry department's five intramural hockey teams have been announced. Come and cheer your fellow chemists on to victory! The teams vary in experience and ability from D league (beginners) to C No Checking and C+ leagues (advanced). All games are held at the MIT ice rink in Johnson Athletic Center. Please contact Stacey Eckman at x3-6964, email: sceckman@mit.edu

D League: Absolute Zero Sunday Feb 28 5:30p.m.
D League: Buckypucks Sunday Feb 14 6:30pm
  Thursday Feb 25 11:30pm
D+ League: Ice9 Wednesday Feb 17 8:30pm
  Thursday Mar 4 11:30pm
  Sunday Mar 7 7:30pm
C No Checking League: Cold Fusion Thursday Feb 18 10:30pm
  Wednesday Mar 10 8:30pm
C+ League: Toxic Waste Wednesday Mar 3 8:30pm

Organizational Meeting of the MIT Chemistry Outreach Program

Are you interested in doing chemistry that (almost) always works? Venturing beyond the Cambridge/Boston area? Working with people from outside of your research group?

Then come to an organizational meeting of the MIT Chemistry Outreach Program! Join other graduate students perfoming amazing chemistry demonstrations in area high schools this spring. Come to the Norris Room (18-490) on Thursday, February 18th at 6:30 pm. THERE WILL BE FOOD! Questions? Contact Dawn Bennett at x3-1835, 18-248, dbennett@mit.edu

Tax Information Workshop For International Scholars

A workshop will be held for those international scholars: including staff, researchers and faculty members who need tax assistance on Thursday, February 25, 1999 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 in the Student Center, La Sala De Puerto Rico sponsored by the International Scholars Office. Topics include: tax requirements for international researchers and faculty members in the US, residency status for tax purposes, treaty provisions, filing requirements, and types of income subject to US taxation. There will be an opportunity for questions and answers.
