Over thirty faculty members direct research programs in the MIT Department of Chemistry. Current research spans the breadth of chemistry, including research in the areas of biological chemistry, environmental chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, materials chemistry, nanoscience, and physical chemistry.

Specialized areas such as bioinorganic chemistry, biophysical chemistry, organometallic chemistry, physical organic chemistry, synthesis, surface chemistry, and chemical physics are also covered.
