About the hike
The Orientation Hike will take place on Saturday September 2nd. We will take two buses up to the White Mountains of New Hampshire; one will go to the popular Franconia Notch region, and the other will go to the Sandwich Range mountains. The bus ride will be around 2½ hours, and each of the hikes will involve around five to seven hours on foot (including rest). There will be six groups on each bus, each having approximately nine hikers and one experienced leader. Each bus will have groups of varying ability.
Meeting
On Saturday morning hikers will need to meet at 7:30am at the front entrance of Ashdown house. All buses will depart from this location. Please be on time; if you arrive after 7:45am you risk losing your spot.
What to wear
- Shoes – lightweight comfortable hiking boots are preferable. Sneakers are okay. You will not be permitted to board the bust in poor footwear, including backless shoes, most sandals, or dress shoes.
- Clothing – dress in layers. A light jacket is recommended for everyone. Your leader will let you know if you need to bring swimsuits or cold weather gear. Be prepared for some rain. Bring extra socks. If you bring a light change of clothes, you will be able to leave it on the bus.
- Backpack – a pack in good condition that can be worn on both shoulders is strongly recommended. Bags which must be hand-carried will not be permitted; you will need both hands free.
What to bring
- Lunch/food – sandwiches and fruit often work well. Snack bars, trail mix, cheese, chocolate.
- Water – for the shorter hikes, one liter of water will be sufficient. For the harder hikes, two liters of water may be preferable. Your hike leader will advise you a few days before.
- Medications – sunscreen and insect repellent will make for a pleasant hike. Bring any medications you might need, and tell your hike leader ahead of time about conditions that may put you at risk.
Weather
The trip will proceed rain or shine. There is a possibility of bad weather, but at this time of year, a full day of rain is rare. Pouring rain in Cambridge has no bearing on glorious sun in the Whites. Check the National Weather Service's forecast for Lincoln, NH for up-to-date weather information.
