Large Events from Past YearsVeritas Forum @ MIT (2007-2010)In the spring of 2007 UCO hosted its first Veritas Forum! The topic was "Science, Faith and Technology" and speakers included Francis Collins, Prof. Ian Hutchinson, Prof. Rodney Brooks, and Prof. Rosalind Picard. Over 700 students attended these events over the course of four days! The Veritas Forum won one of three 2007 Student Leader awards for Outstanding Event. While only four students were able to attend the ceremony, it was, by God's grace, the hard work the entire planning committee, the MIT Christian community, and the Veritas Organization who made this event possible. A smaller forum was held in 2008, and addressed the question "How Could a Good God Allow Suffering?" and featured Pastor and philosopher Tim Keller of Redeemer Church in New York. Over 500 students attended and many great discussions were sparked all across campus. The third forum was in March of 2009 focused around the question: "More than Matter: Does it Matter?" discussing what it means to be human and how that affects the way we live. Three seperate nights featured questions such as “Sharper, Flatter, Does it Matter?” discussing the arts; “Matter, Antimatter, Doesitmatter?” focused around faith and physics; and "More than Mammals, Why do we Matter?" examined the implications on ethics of an atheistic and christian worldview. Over the three nights, more than 600 people were able to attend! The most recent Veritas forum tackled the subject of Freedom in February 2010. First Steven Pinker and William Hurlbut discussed "Minding our Morals: Freedom and the Brain" discussing the relationship between free choice and science and the implications for morality. Next, Beatrice Fernando, author, advocate, and former slave discussed her experieinces and the impact her faith had on her in a talk titled "Freedom: In Body or in Spirit". Again, over 600 people total attended the events, and many students were able to start conversations with their friends. Recordings of each talk are avaliable from the Veritas media website. UCO Missions Trip to Haiti (2007 and 2008)During spring break, 15 MIT students traveled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, with Partners With Haiti. There, they worked alongside the Haitian community to put a cement floor in a school, worshipped the Lord with our Haitian brothers and sisters, met with local university students and experienced life in a developing country. The trip was amazing and God used the team to glorify His name in so many ways! Here is a video with highlights from the 2007 trip. Dinner with Christian Faculty (Spring 2005)About 11 Christian faculty members and 60 MIT students gathered for dinner to get to know one another and promote unity among the Christian community at MIT. |
