About CIPD

A joint effort between MIT’s School of Engineering and Sloan School of Management, CIPD links the best ideas of academia with the best experience of industry. Our team members share our dynamic vision—MIT faculty, students, and staff join with industrial partners to research the process of product development (PD) from engineering concept to management practice; from product design to market delivery.

The internet will be key to product development’s future—new products will be developed by just-in-time collaborations of globally-distributed teams linked seamlessly by web-based tools and processes.

These collaborations will evolve through an emerging services marketplace, where lead firms will find the world's best suppliers of information, components, and support services.

Using industrial sites as our laboratories, and focusing on the special challenges of complex systems, we work with engineers and managers in real-world PD environments to extend the fundamental knowledge of the PD process, and provide innovative improvements to current practice.

FAQ

"I have invented a new product. Can you help me develop and market it?"
CIPD's research and education programs are designed to add to the fundamental knowledge of the entire product development process. Unfortunately, we do not have the facilities or personnel to help individual inventors with their ideas. Several groups at MIT may be able to direct you to an appropriate source of information and assistance.
Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation maintains a web page that describes resources for the inventor.

The Technology Licensing Office identifies technologies that may be suitable for startup companies. The TLO selects innovative technologies with a broad range of potential applications in new markets, then introduces them to appropriate potential investors.

MIT Enterprise Forum promotes the formation and growth of innovative and technologically-oriented companies through a series of specialized executive education programs.

Can I get a degree from CIPD?
No, CIPD is a research center and does not offer appointments or degrees. However, MIT students enrolled in appropriate programs can work on CIPD projects and receive CIPD funding. We recommend that you review the MIT course catalog to find a program that best suits your needs, then contact that department directly. You can find APPLICATION information for prospective students on-line at: http://web.mit.edu/referencepubs/catalogue/

Are any studentships available in your department?
Research Assistant appointments are available to full-time registered MIT students working on CIPD-sponsored research projects. Only full-time MIT students may apply for these positions.

"How can I obtain copies of publications?"
CIPD does not sell or supply any MIT reports. However, you may order published papers and student theses through MIT's Library–Document Services.
