Stymied by conceptual, technical, organizational, and political challenges, few in-house IT units have been able to capitalize on the proposed benefits of object
orientation. The Travelers Property and Casualty Corporation Claim unit has been evolving toward an object environment since 1991. In the process, Travelers has developed three key systems, an object base
for future development, and a strong partnership among line managers, Claim unit IT staff, and central IT staff. This case describes how Travelers overcame the challenges associated with implementing an OO
environment. The lessons they have learned in this process are relevant to any firm that is rebuilding its IT infrastructure. |
