Community Charter School of Cambridge

CCSC, a tuition-free, public charter school, opened its doors to students in September 2005. Beginning with grades 7, 8, and 9, CCSC engages each student in meaningful work inside the school and in the larger community through internships and community-based projects. All CCSC students will be prepared to succeed in college and gain the confidence and skills to be leaders in their communities.

How was CityDays involved? Students were matched with teachers to help set up and decorate classrooms, including moving furniture, painting, and preparing course materials.

Concilio Hispano

How was CityDays involved? Students prepared office walls for painting - removing everything from walls, filling holes, cleaning walls.

Earthworks

EarthWorks Projects seeks to connect urban residents experience the nature that exists in Greater Boston. EarthWorks strives to create a healthier and more sustainable urban environment through hands-on projects, education, and advocacy and strengthens communities through service to the environment.

How was CityDays involved? Urban wilds are public places that retain the character that represents Boston's natural heritage. They also face multiple threats including pollution, erosion, dumping and invasions of alien plant species. Volunteers helped prepare for tree planting and planted native trees as part of their ongoing restoration work.

Esplanade Association

To preserve, restore and enhance the historic Charles River Esplanade as a vital urban park to be enjoyed by all.

How was CityDays involved? Volunteers participated in a river cleanup, which included brush cutting and invasive plant removal, trash pickup, raking and other landscaping tasks.

Friends of the Shattuck Shelter

The Friends of the Shattuck Shelter is dedicated to preventing and ending homelessness among men and women and/by helping them achieve self-sufficency and secure and maintain permanent housing.

How was CityDays involved? Students assembled "halloween" pops for Life Lines, their HIV/AIDS outreach and education program.

Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House

Our Emergency Food Pantry helps reduce hunger in Cambridge. In its 18th year, our Pantry is the second largest in Cambridge and provides a 3-day supply of food to over 1,000 different families, children and individuals each year. With support from FEMA, Project Bread, the city of Cambridge, and private foundations the MFNH Pantry distributes over 2000 lbs. of food weekly to 60 or 70 families. Emergency food is critical for these families' basic needs.

How was CityDays involved? Students helped with cleaning and reorganizing the basement, weeding the parking lot, re-turfing the children's playground, and painting in the kitchen.

Media and Technology Charter High School

To serve 185 disadvantaged Boston teenagers in a rigourous, public, college prep program of study so that they will succed in college and beyond.

How was CityDays involved? There are 45 MATCH Corps residential tutors who do one year of service by full-time tutoring our kids. Each City Days MIT student was paired with one of these residential tutors for four hours of tasks--setting up files, setting up dorm rooms, light cleaning, and some lesson planning

Roxbury Tenants of Harvard Association, Inc.

To insure community participation in decision making, to foster the improvement of housing, recreation and related facilities of residents and to improve the social and economic conditions of the community.

How was CityDays involved? Most students worked on a painting project at the daycare center. There was also a group of students who helped set up the computer center, library and after-school program for the new school year. Some students also worked outside in the garden.
