In 1998, the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research of Saitama, Japan (RIKEN) and MIT established the Picower-RIKEN Neuroscience Research Center. The Picower Center has created a strong, long-term, and mutually beneficial relationship for joint research in the field of neuroscience, that builds upon the unique resources of each organization. RIKEN provides significant support for the Center's research programs and faculty growth. RIKEN investigators include: Professors Yasunori Hayashi, Guosong Liu, Earl Miller, Morgan Sheng, Susumu Tonegawa, and Matthew Wilson. The first, second and third Picower-RIKEN Neuroscience Symposia were held in 1999, 2001and 2003, respectively. Several RIKEN Fellows work in the Picower Center laboratories under the direction of the Center's faculty. The RIKEN Brain Science Institute was established in October, 1997 and aims to become an international center of excellence for researchers from Japan and across the world.
