With less than 5 minutes to go in the half, MIT won an ESU put-in at a 5-meter scrum and no. 8 Carly Narlesky scored. Then with seconds to go in the half, MIT won a ruck at half way and the ball was fed out to Ogunniyi and she outran two defenders to give MIT a 24- 5 half time lead. MIT's pressure at an ESU scrum only 2 minutes into the second half caused a turnover and flanker Sam Cohen scored, bumping the lead up to 29-5. Just 5 minutes later MIT's forwards won another ESU 5-meter scrum feed and Ogunniyi scored to up the lead to 36- 5. At just about the final whistle, who else but Ade Ogunniyi took off on a 25 meter run beating 4 defenders. Final score was MIT 41, ESU 5.

days, the MIT Triathlon club sent eight athletes to the USA
Triathlon Collegiate Nationals last week, held in Lubbock,
Texas. Facing competition from the best Triathlon clubs in the
nation, the male team averaged 2:45 in the race, which consists
of a mile swim, a 25 mile bike, and a 6.2 mile run. The men's
team was led by Rastislav Racz '10 with a 2:32 performance. The
three-athlete strong female team finished with an average of
3:04. Highlights for the team included scorching burns from the
unforgiving Texas sun, Jana Marjanovic '10 and Lindsey Holland
'10 swimming in 53 degree water without a wetsuit, and Zuzana
Trnovcova '09 posting the 11th best time in the bike-leg out of
all female athletes (she finished 43rd out of 313 female
overall).
Badminton - National Collegiate!
March 20-22, 2009
The MIT Badminton Club travelled to Irvine
College in California to compete in the National Collegiate.
The club has been the strongest team in the northeast area for
the past two years. Despite stiff competition, team members
Arjun Mehta, Xin Wang and Heymian Wong all advanced to the
second round of competition.
Sport TaeKwonDo - National
Champions! March 21-22, 2009
This past Spring, the Sport Taekwondo traveled
to Brown University to compete at the 34th Collegiate Taekwondo
Nationals. The competition was fierce and even bigger than last
year with over 400 competitors, both the experienced and
newcomers. The club brought a total of forty competitors,
capturing first place overall by 2 points despite being
outnumbered by Brown, which brought sixty-four competitors.
Starting off the weekend was the poomsae (forms) competition at
all belt levels. In most of the divisions where the team had
competitors, at least one person placed. The second day
highlighted both color and black belt sparring, where once
again, MIT placed in most divisions. In women's red belt
featherweight, MIT swept 1-2 and both third places! Black belt
sparring came next. Competitors were strong and stood well on
their own against athletes who had more sparring experience and
years of training. Team Captains Christopher J. Han and Corinna
Hui participated in their first national competition at the
black belt level since receiving their black belts this past
December. Han easily won his first match by point gap and
overall performed very well fighting against top-caliber
players. Hui also fought well, earning bronze in the women's
lightweight division.
Cycling - National Road Champions!
April 26-27, 2008
The MIT Cycling Team won the 2008 Division II
national road racing championships after a weekend of
exceptional performances by its men’s and women’s
teams in Fort Collins, CO. At the USA Cycling Collegiate
National Championships, held May 9-11, MIT Cycling seized an
early lead in the opening team time trial and built their
advantage all weekend long to take a surprise victory.
The women’s team scored first with a superb win in
Friday’s team time trial. Martha Buckley, Yuri Matsumoto,
Zuzka Trnovcova and Sonya Cates powered through a flat and
windy course, covering 25 kilometers in 29 minutes and 51
seconds to take the win by 8 seconds over their closest rivals.
Later that day, the men’s team of Jason Sears, Eric
Edlund, Seth Behrends and Issao Fujiwara beat a host of strong
competitors to finish 4th in the men’s TTT in 25 minutes
and 10 seconds.
MIT’s women added to their laurels over Saturday’s
51-mile road race course, which featured a combination of flat
terrain exposed to the wind and difficult power climbs. Buckley
finished a strong 3rd, Matsumoto came in 10th and Cates took
19th. In the men’s race, Edlund took 13th in the field
sprint while Fujiwara came in 57th. With these strong finishes,
the Engineers were still ahead coming into Sunday’s flat,
fast, and technical criterium race, and once again MIT’s
women turned in great performances. Matsumoto unleashed her
devastating sprint, which had earned her the Eastern Collegiate
Cycling Conference Division II women’s championship only
two weeks before, to finish 6th. Buckley came in two spots
behind in 8th and Cates finished only a few seconds behind the
day’s race leaders, in 27th. In the 75-minute men’s
race, Sears sprinted to an outstanding 4th, beating his own 7th
place from last year’s nationals criterium. A veteran of
many collegiate cycling championships on road and track, Sears
made sure he was part of the day’s key breakaway group
that finished ahead of the main field. Edlund, Fujiwara and
Behrends all finished in the main pack, taking 43rd, 49th and
54th, respectively.
When all the points were tallied, MIT had ended its stunning
weekend with 395 points, beating Dartmouth’s364 points to
take first place among Division II schools across the country.
Individually Buckley finished 4th, Matsumoto 8th, and Cates
25th in the women’s omnium, while Edlund came in 22nd
among the men’s racers.
Cycling - Conference Champions!
April 26-27, 2008
With more than 30 riders from MIT competing in

MIT Cycling presented by FXDD claimed the Division II Overall
Season Championship. In addition to the team’s overall
success for the weekend, Yuri Matsumoto secured 3rd in the
overall season standings for the women’s A category, and
1st in Division II, taking home the yellow jersey of the Series
Leader (right). Three more MIT riders placed second 2nd in
Division II for their respective categories, Martha Buckley in
women’s A, Zuzka Trnovcova in women’s B and Issao
Fujiwara in men’s B. MIT will be sending 3 women and 4
men to Boulder, Colorado for the USA Cycling Collegiate
National Road Championships, which will be held May 9-11.
Matsumoto, Buckley and Trnovcova will represent MIT’s
women’s team, while Jason Sears, Edlund, Fujiwara and
Seth Behrends will represent MIT’s men’s
team.
Sport Taekwondo - National
Champions! April 25-26, 2008
The Sport Taekwondo club went to Stanford
University to compete at Collegiate Nationals. The competition
was huge with 300 competitors and fierce with both experienced
and newcomers. The club brought a total of thirty-seven
competitors (six alumni and thirty-one students), the largest
team in attendance. Starting off the weekend was poomsae
(forms) competition in all belt levels. In most of the
divisions where the team had competitors, at least one person
placed. Ending the day was color belt sparring. Once again, the
team placed most of the colored belts. Some even swept their
divisions! The green-blue belt girls placed 1-2-3 in
featherweight! The next day, the competition was intense with
black belt sparring. Competitors were strong and stood well on
their own against athletes who had more sparring experience and
years of training. In particular, Erica Chan '07, Alicia Zhou
'06, and Nicole Teague '10 placed third, second, and third,
respectively in their weight divisions! They will continue and
compete at Team Trials, where medalists have a chance to
represent the US in the World University Taekwondo
Championships. In the end, MIT won first place in novice
division, followed by a third place win in championship
division. In the overall division, MIT secured first
place!

comes with a close victory, and are excited for their upcoming
races later this month. Charles Moore G sums up his experience:
"the men’s 8 race may be responsible for the most painful
three minutes of my life -- I can't wait to face off against
Harvard [in two weeks at the World Graduate Rowing
Championships here on the Charles River]”." Postdoc Mark
Ashdown summed up the weekend: "I enjoy competing, and
especially winning - it makes all those 6am training sessions
seem worthwhile."
Women's Waterpolo Tournament -
March 1-2, 2008
The 14th ranked Engineers came out of their
first tournament at Bates College this past weekend undefeated
with wins over Wellesley College, Bates College, Boston
University, and Bowdoin College. Rookie Carrie DeBoer split her
time in the goal and in the field and still managed to lead the
team with 9 goals over the course of the weekend. MIT outscored
their opponents 47-18. Captain Analiese DiConti also had her
debut in goal, allowing only 3 goals in her 6 quarters in the
cage and tallying 8 goals on offense. Set Defenders Kristen
Cook and Kellie Young proved tremendous defensive players,
keeping the opponents’ whole sets almost scoreless
throughout the weekend and tallying 8 and 6 goals of their own,
respectively. Blair Brettmann out swam the opponents, taking
advantage of many opportunities in front of the cage, scoring 8
times. Lisa Tacoronte also scored 6 goals, and Rachel Price
scored her second goal as an Engineer. MIT next faces no. 20
Boston College on Thursday March 13 at 6pm in the Z center for

Triathlon - 2006-2007 Season Wrap
up
Kate D'Epagnier, a graduate student in MIT's
department of Mechanical Engineering, was successful as a
triathlon age group competitor for women 20-24 in the Summer
2006 season. In the Old Colony International distancetriathlon
she received second place in her age group with a time of
2:33:28, and in the Greater Lowell Triathlon she received first
place in her age group. In the 2007 season, she placed third
for females 25-29 in the Mooseman International Distance
triathlon. Kate enjoys leading her team's swimming workouts and
is looking forward to competing in her first ironman distance
triathlon at Lake Placid later this summer.
After racing and training with the MIT
triathlon team for two years and an intense summer of racing
for MIT at local sprint races (2006), Pete Mayer tackled his
first iron-distance event, taking 3rd place in his age group.
(ChesapeakeMan Ultradistance Triathlon, 9/30/06) Two weeks
later, he qualified for the 2007 Boston Marathon with a time of
3:09:16 (Bay State Marathon, 10/15/07). Pete continues to race
locally, and recently placed second in his age group at the
Ashland Lions International Distance Triathlon
(6/17/07).
Martha Buckley came in 1st overall for women
in the Northeast Collegiate Triathlon Conference championship
2006 (Colby Triathlon) - in the same race she took 3rd overall
for women. She also took 2nd in the Holliston Lions Triathlon,
2006.
In the July 8, 2007, Hollison triathlon race,
Zuzana Trnovcova placed third in her age group, Lindsey Holland
placed second in her age group (her first triathlon ever!), and
Kathryn D'Epagnier placed first in her age group.
Badminton - May,
2007
The MIT Badminton Club won first place in the
NorthEast Inter-Collegiate Badminton Leagueafter winning 9 out
of 10 games this season. The team played very hard against
Harvard, BU, Babson and Brandeis Universities to become the
2006-2007 Champions. The last time MIT had won first place in
the league was in 2003, so it was very exciting for the team to
finally clench the title again in 4 years.
Cycling - April
30, 2007
The MIT cycling team returned from
the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference's Championships
weekend with the season team omnium title for Division II,
defending its victory from the previous year. The omnium
includes points earned during the entire two months of the
collegiate road season across the eight categories of racing,
including team and individual time trials, road races,
criteriums, and circuits. MIT beat Yale and Dartmouth for the
top honors. The US Military Academy at Westpoint and Princeton
rounded out the top five teams of the division.
In addition to the team omnium, several
racers won personal season omnium titles. Zuzka Trnovcova won
the women's C, and Yuri Matsumoto took second in the women's B,
both in their first year of road racing. Nick Loomis captured
second in the men's D category.
The championship races had challenges for
climbers and sprinters alike. The road race featured 3,000 feet
of climbing per loop through the Hudson River Valley.
Martha Buckley proved to be an unrelenting climber, taking
fourth after more than 64 miles of brutal hills. The men's B
time trial squad made short work of the flat TTT course,
working together in tight form to win its race. The criterium
favored sprinters with an open four-corner course. A lead-out
from Issao Fujiwara helped Nick Loomis place second in the
men's D with Fujiwara right behind in third. Natalia Gardiol
sprinted into fourth in the women's B. AJ Schrauth powered
through to a fourth-place finish in the mens' B criterium after
an hour of intense racing. The team came in a close second for
the weekend overall.

2007
The No. 4 ranked Engineers (14-0)
qualified for Club Nationals for the third straight year last
month, by defeating Boston College, 6-5, in the title
game.
After rallying from a three goal deficit, the
Eagles almost tied the game with just twenty seconds left.
However, co-captain Kelly Cavazos '07 blocked the
would-be-game-tying shot to ensure MIT's victory.
"When we gained possession of the ball with
six seconds left on the game clock, I was on such a high," said
co-captain
Lindsey Sheehan
'07. "The win just meant so much more because of
the challenges we've faced this year."
MIT's team effort really shone through, as
six different women contributed points. Co-captain Christi
Winiarz '07, Analiese DiConti '10, Kristen Cook G, Aditi
Nagaraj '10, Lisa Tacoronte '10, and Sheehan each put a point
on the board. Cavazos also contributed with a tournament high
13 saves which earned her "Player of the Week" for the
league.
En route to the title game, MIT toppled
Wellesley, 9-1, Bates, 11-2, and Boston University,
12-1.
Winiarz was the leading scorer for the
weekend tallying 13 of MIT's 39 goals. Cook and DiConti also
contributed seven goals apiece.
Sport Taekwondo -
March 30, 2007
Over the weekend of March 30, the MIT sport taekwondo team
continued its ongoing success at the National Collegiate
Taekwondo Championships in College Station, Texas. This year's
championships, held on the home turf of perennial rival Texas
A&M University, provided several taekwondo team newcomers
the opportunity to meet unknown competitors, while allowing
seasoned members the opportunity to match wits with some of the
nation's top athletes. By the end of the two-day event, the
team had captured bronze medals in the novice (colored belt)
and championship (black belt) divisions, claimed bronze in
overall, and won some twenty individual awards. Most
impressively, four MIT black belts - Captain John T. Wong G,
Captain Erica Y. Chan '08, Alicia Zhou `07 and Sharon A.
Lawrence '08 - gained the right to compete for a chance to
represent the United States at the World University Games in
Bangkok, Thailand.
Badminton - March
24, 2007
On the weekend of March 24, the badminton club took a team of
eight students to represent MIT at the 2007 National Collegiate
Badminton Championships, held at the University of California,
Berkeley. Team member Lars Boyde `09 entered the championship
without a rank and was up against approximately 63 other
competitors in the men's singles bracket. He defeated the two
players who were ranked fourth and fifth in the tournament to
claim the bronze medal. The badminton team ranked ninth out of
the 23 participating schools.
