"Rain or shine, Cambridge is truly a beautiful city. The River Cam runs beneath centuries-old bridges, past fields of daffodils, and manicured lawns of colleges founded by kings. The architecture blew me away...any one of the magnificent Gothic or Anglo-Saxon college courts or chapels in Cambridge would be a renowned landmark if it stood alone."
- Kevin Lang, Course 2 (CME Alum 2000-01)

Spend Your Junior Year at the University of Cambridge

The Cambridge-MIT Exchange, now in its seventh full year, allows MIT juniors to study for a year at the University of Cambridge, England while Cambridge undergraduates spend a year at MIT. CME was initially formed by the Cambridge-MIT Institute (CMI), a strategic alliance established in July 2000 between MIT and the University of Cambridge. Twenty-five MIT students from nine of the 14 eligible MIT departments are participating in the Cambridge-MIT Exchange for the 2007-2008 academic year. In future years, we hope to expand the exchange to include more MIT departments and more options for MIT students to spend time at the "other" Cambridge.

"I really enjoyed the personal attention I got from supervisions and my Director of Studies, and I feel that I am going back to MIT with a lot of math under my belt. At first I was wary of being restricted to studying only one subject, but I found this elimination of other subjects refreshing, because it allowed me to accelerate in math."
- Tilke Judd, Course 18 (CME Alum 2001-02)

About the University of Cambridge

The University of Cambridge is one of the world's leading educational institutions. Founded in 1209, the university offers undergraduate degrees in 25 disciplines. In addition to academic departments and research laboratories, the university is comprised of 31 distinct Colleges. These Colleges are not only where undergraduates study and work, they also form the center of social and academic life for Cambridge students.
Lectures are given by the university departments, so you'll attend classes with students from many colleges.

"My year at Cambridge was the perfect complement to MIT. Experiencing the different academic culture taught me a lot about how I operate as a student; it gave me a perspective on my education that I could not have gotten if I had stayed at MIT my junior year. The social life at the university rocked. The time I spent at Cambridge changed my college experience from good to really great."
- Brett Whittemore, Course 6 (CME Alum 2001-02)

Costs

The program is intended to minimize additional costs to you. You will register and pay tuition to MIT and not to the University of Cambridge. The only fees that you will pay in Cambridge are the cost of rent and food at your assigned college. If you're an undergraduate receiving need-based financial aid and are attending CME for credit toward your MIT degree, the Institute will meet your full financial need including the cost of travel to England in accordance with its standard financial aid packaging parameters for self-help and scholarship.
