Highs & Lows of Collective Intelligence

This Amazon review of the Chronicles of Narnia boxed set touches on several topics that we've touched on in class and on this blog, while hilariously missing the point:

'I bought these books to have something nice to read to my grandkids. I had to stop, however, because the books are nothing more than advertisments for "Turkish Delight," a candy popular in the U.K. The whole point of buying books for my grandkids was to give them a break from advertising, and here (throughout) are ads for this "Turkish Delight"! How much money is this Mr. Lewis getting from the Cadbury's chocolate company anyway? This man must be laughing to the bank!'

The collective intelligence of Amazon ranked his review fairly low (10 out of 113 readers thought it was useful), for obvious reasons.

However inaccurate the Hon. Lou P. Nizer's perceptions of product placement in C.S. Lewis may be, however, we should be aware that this is the lens through which future consumers will view historical works of art, reading details intended to create verisimilitude as brand placements.
