Portable Music Players Change Music Consumption Patterns
The emergence of the modern portable media player has changed consumer’s habits of listening to music and has changed their music selections. Dylan Jones, the author, speaks about his interest in different genres across three decades of music (e.g. rap, disco, punk rock, classic rock, etc.). According to Jones, the Apple iPod’s ability to store multitudes of songs has allowed him to rekindle his interest in collecting music. He has now purchased commemorative albums and placed them on his iPod music player, something that he believes was not a trend prior to the advent of music players. Furthermore, Jones speaks about the diversity of music that he has sought and has listened to after purchasing his iPod.
Clearly, this trend in use of portable media players translates into a blending of the lines that traditionally delineate different musical genres and generations. Furthermore, it increases consumers’ exposure to various types of music and various artists.
