Reality TV and Politics

(found while reading this week's "Newsweek")

Raj Bhakta, who appeared on "The Apprentice," has decided to run for political office. More specifically, Bhakta is running in Pennsylvania as a moderate republican -- pro-choice, questioning the war in Iraq, and dubious of Bush's economic policies. And he's expecting to win.

Of his decision to run for office, Bhakta says, "People in politics and the media have a certain bias against reality-television folks. But if you talk to your common citizens, they love it."

Bhakta's statement points out an interesting.... occurrence.... point.... something. I guess his statement just implies that the average American knows more about what happens on reality TV such as "The Apprentice" and "American Idol" than about what happens in politics, and he's hoping that this already seeded knowledge of who he is will help him come election time. I guess I just feel like he's selling his image more than he's trying to win over voters with a political platform that actually fits their needs. Even the politics section on his website is vague. The "Raj on Raj" section feels a bit like Stephen Colbert's statements about Stephen Colbert. I'm skeptical. Even if I loved him on TV (and in all honesty I've never seen "The Apprentice"), I wouldn't vote for him unless I agreed with his political stance.
