User Rates
Below are the most commonly-used rates for MIT and other academic users. For full details on academic rates and for commercial rates, please contact Ms. Jei Lee Freeman (jeileef@mit.edu, 617-253-5965).
In general, there are three rates: 1) for self-users, 2) for training, and 3) for assisted use, where there is no intent to train the user but merely to obtain data.
These rates are subject to change.
Analytical SEF
- Assisted Use (Most instruments): $87/hr.
- Training (Most instruments): $81/hr.
- Self Use
XPS, AFM, FTIR, Auger: $44/hr.
Most other systems: $33-37/hr.
Consumables charged at cost.
Crystal Growth SEF
- SQUIDs
- Assisted Use: $70/hr.
- Training: $85/session
- Self Use: $270 per day (weekdays), $220 per day (weekends)
- ICP-OES
- Assisted Use : $86/hr.
- Training: $69/hr., 2 hour minimum
- Self Use: $35/hr.
- Polishing/cutting equipment
- Assisted: $81/hr.
- Training: $75/hr.
- Self-use: $37/hr.
- Furnaces: Varies, please ask for details

Electron Microscopy SEF
- Most Equipment
- Assisted Use: $95/hr.
- Training: $89/hr.
- Self Use:
- All microscopes $44/hr.
- Microtome $22/hr.
- Gatan PIPS, Fishcione 1010 Ion Mill: $7/hr.

X-ray Diffraction SEF
- Most Equipment
- Assisted Use: $120/hr.
- Training: $201/hr.
- Self Use (most systems): $51/hr.
- Night/weekend use (most systems): $17/hr.
