Purpose of Award:
CMSE recognizes the financial burden MIT junior faculty face in utilizing large experimental facilities for research needs. Therefore, contingent on availability of funds, CMSE will fund up to four individual awards per year to MIT assistant professors at a level as high as $5,000 for each award. Each award will last for one year and can only be used for user fees in CMSE shared experimental facilities.
These awards are restricted to faculty engaged in research activities related to
aspects of materials science and engineering as practiced at CMSE.
Policies Relating to Award:
Junior faculty members at the assistant professor level engaging in some aspect of materials research as practiced at CMSE may apply for up to a $5,000 award by sending the CMSE director a one to two page proposal which must include the following:
All proposals will be reviewed by the center director and awards will be made based on the strength of the faculty proposal and financial need justification.
All funds must be used within one year of award.
Faculty members who do not receive an award in a given year may re-apply the next year, however, faculty members will be limited to one award during the time he/she holds assistant professor status.
Financial overruns in excess of award amounts will not be allowed. Faculty members desiring to continue research in CMSE shared experimental faculties can provide a research or discretionary account number to continue after award funding has been exhausted.
