MRSEC Fundamental Research Leads to HDTVs with Enhanced Colors

Nano-sized quantum dots emit different color light based on their size

The MIT MRSEC often supports high risk research projects that seek fundamental knowledge with no direct technical application in mind. Frequently, however, new ideas for utilizing this basic knowledge emerge and a new company is born to develop the technology and bring it to the marketplace. Between 2001-2005, the MIT

MRSEC supported basic research in the nascent area of quantum dots. From that basic research, the company QD Vision was launched by MRSEC faculty and students. Recently Sony announced that it will be marketing a new HDTV with an improved range of colors. Utilizing technology developed at QD Vision, this represents the first time quantum dots have been utilized in a mass-produced electronics product.
