MRSEC-supported fundamental research leads to a new start-up

Schematic of the Svaya layer-by-layer nanoscale spray technology. In this process, water solutions (purple and red) of polymers and/or nanoparticles are alternately sprayed onto surfaces to form highly uniform, nanoscale functional coatings

Svaya Nanotechnologies is developing equipment, processes and formulations for the deposition of multifunction, nanostructured thin films on large area substrates. This new technology was enabled by fundamental research in layer-by-layer assembled films at the MIT MRSEC. Spun out of the Hammond group, the founders have created a nanoscale spray process that produces highly uniform, molecular-scale films on large area substrates. The process is scalable, low cost, and environmentally friendly.  This new technology allows significant process and performance improvements in multilayered optical, anti-microbial, self-cleaning, and anti-fog coatings, to name a few.
