Machining materials at the micro- and nanoscale

MRSEC staff members Dr. Shiahn Chen and Mr. Patrick Boisvert Instruct MIT researchers on the use of the new FIB tool.

A new addition to the MIT MRSEC shared experimental facility, a Helios Nanolab 600 Focused Ion Beam (FIB) workstation, has generated great excitement and is being used in wide ranging research studies. This equipment uses a focused beam of ions to machine materials at the nano- and micro-scale, making it possible to create new types of nanoscale objects and devices.

Over the past year, more than 90 different users from 39 research groups across MIT have been trained to use the equipment. Results generated to date have impacted research programs in areas as diverse as biomaterials, nano metal alloys, polymers, materials for energy, water purification, and optical and electronic materials, to name a few.
