Policies for the MIT Quiz Bowl Team

*The MIT Quiz Bowl team receives about $2000 per academic year from
the CAC Program Board in exchange for running the IAP intramural
College Bowl tournament and other on-campus quiz bowl oriented
activities. We interact within the Program Board through our
inclusion in the Academic Competitions Committee (ACC). The
responsibilities of the ACC are to:

1. Organize and run the intramural IAP College Bowl tournament.
2. Create and implement new forms of campus-wide programming of an
academic nature. (e.g. Tech Trivia, MacGregor in-house tournament,
Varsity Club tournament).

The primary responsibility is the first one, especially since the CAC
views the Quiz Bowl team as the most experienced group of people at
MIT who can run a successful tournament. In exchange for this
service, we receive funding to attend and to host interscholastic quiz
bowl competitions.

The situation to be addressed is the position of the MIT Quiz
Bowl team within the structure of the CAC Program Board in the form of
the Academic Competitions Committee. As it is, the Quiz Bowl team is
the only constituent of the ACC. Until this situation changes, both
groups are best served as being one and the same, with the student
leaders of the MIT Quiz Bowl team being the student leaders of the
ACC.

*It is useful, but not required, for the MIT Quiz Bowl Team to have a
coach/advisor. The Coach/Advisor must be an employee of MIT, and must
meet the requirements set by CBIC and NAQT for an official
representative of the Institute.

Their primary functions are:

- Oversee regular practices, with the goal of helping players improve their
performance both as individuals and as team members.
- Act as the official representative of the Institute
- Speak for all terams representing MIT at any Tournament
- Advise the officers in the selection the players for the teams for
	tournaments
- Aid in interactions with the Program Board

The coach/advisor should be a former college-level quiz bowl player
and/or must have a deep-seated interest in the maintainance of a
quality quiz bowl program.

*There are also several essential duties which might be necessary to
establish as "sub-offices."

* An Equipment Manager is needed to maintain and upkeep the buzzer systems
   and clocks.

* An Archivist is needed to provide storage for and maintain organization
of the team's supply of hard copy questions. Storage might be found
through the CAC, ASA, or some other external central source.

* A Director of Recruitment is needed to organize mailings to incoming
students, arrange for the team's appearance at the Activities Midway,
and put together the Kick-off Meeting at the beginning of the Fall
semester. This position involves working with the CACPB and being at
   MIT over the summer.

* The Beaver Bonspiel Tournament Director is needed to organize and run
our autumn invitational tournament. This position would best be
assisted by a "tournament organizing committee" of other team members.

* The Intramural Tournament Director is needed to organize and run our
CBI intramural during IAP. This person will work with the Program Board,
and could assisted by a "tournament organizing committee" of other team
   members.

*Honorary, non-voting membership may be extended to non-eligible
persons by the consent of the officers. The following are conditions
on honorary members and interscholastic participation:

    - Non-MIT college students who attend a school where no
interscholastic quiz bowl organization exists may participate
where allowed as part of an MIT team.

    - Non-college students may not participate in any interscholastic
events as a member of an "MIT" team.

***All team members are eligible to attend tournaments held in the
Boston area (accesible via T), but only those members who attend
practice regularly or obtain dispensation from the president are
eligible to attend tournaments which require traveling outside of
Boston.

*No non-academic (trash) events are to be funded from the money
budgeted to the team by TPTB. All costs for trash events must be paid
by the participating team members.

*Members of the MIT Quiz Bowl team who participate in interscholastic
quiz bowl events are representatives of the Institute. As such,
members should conduct themselves in line with the spirit of good
sportsmanship, fair play, and friendliness.

*The interscholastic quiz bowl tournament which we host is named
"Beaver Bonspiel" and is to be held on the last non-Halloween Saturday
of October.
