digital money:
business and the information economy
February 15, 1996

Abstract

The rapid growth of the World Wide Web and the proliferation of tools for electronic commerce raise a number of challenges for technologists, business people, and policy makers. For example, national central banks and tax authorities are said to be alarmed by the potential impact of electronic commerce systems operating over the Internet. They fear that what appears to be a simple matter of plastic and interface standards for digital money may eventually threaten the global monetary system.

In this forum, we will examine the standars, technologies, and broader economic and social implications of digital money in the information economy.
