Regalia

You may either rent or purchase regalia. All graduates participating in the Commencement Exercises and/or Hooding Ceremony must wear academic regalia. The only exception is for those in active military service, who wear the prescribed dress uniform for their branches of the Service.

Do not discard your regalia rental or purchase receipt: you must have it to pick up your Commencement tickets.

Rental

Regalia orders are placed through the MIT Coop. We recommend that you go to the store in person to be properly fitted and provided with the correct regalia for this milestone event.

Regalia ordering hours

• The Coop in Kendall Square: Monday, April 8 through Saturday, April 27, 9:30 am to 6:30 pm M-F; 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday.
• The Coop in the Stratton Student Center: Monday, April 22 through Friday, April 26, 10 am to 4 pm

Regalia rental pricing

• Black gown and cap: $41. Graduates may keep the cap and tassel as souvenirs.
• PhD gown in MIT red and gray: $165. This price includes a new, octagonal tam and red tassel, which you will be able to keep. Please note that there is a limited number of MIT custom gowns available for rent: place your order early.

The deadline to order regalia is Saturday, April 27. A late fee of $25 will be assessed on orders placed Monday, April 29 through Saturday, May 4. If you do not reserve your regalia before May 4, you may or may not be able to acquire one before Commencement Day. A limited number of extra gowns will be available on a first-come, first-served basis from May 28 through June 7. The late fee of $25 will apply to those rentals, as well. Reminder: you must have your regalia rental receipt to pick up your Commencement tickets.

Rented regalia pick-up

Regalia will be available for pick-up during regular store hours at the Coop in Kendall Square from Tuesday, May 28 through Thursday, June 6. On Friday, June 7, the store will open at 7 am, but please remember to pick up your regalia before Commencement Day.

Regalia return

Regalia must be returned to the Coop in Kendall Square by Saturday, June 15 at 6 pm. Failure to adhere to the terms of the rental agreement will result in a charge for the full retail value of the regalia.

Purchase

Doctoral degree regalia designed specifically for MIT PhD and ScD degree holders is available for purchase through the MIT Coop in Kendall Square. The gown is of gray faille with red velvet front trim and sleeve bars. The hat of gray faille is an octagonal tam with a red tassel. Please note that you do not have to order a hood: your hood will be presented to you at the Hooding Ceremony.
