Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in working with us during Commencement week! Volunteer registration for 2015 will open in April.

We have two volunteer opportunities:

Hooding

At MIT, candidates for the PhD or ScD receive their Doctoral hoods in a separate ceremony the day before Commencement. The 2015 Hooding Ceremony is on Thursday, June 4 at 11:30 am.

The role of volunteers at the Hooding Ceremony is to

  • Give directions
  • Make conversation with guests
  • Help guests solve problems

We are fortunate every year to find friendly and resourceful MIT people to help make the Hooding Ceremony a fun and festive occasion. We hold a training session earlier in the week to familiarize you with the event logistics.

The ceremony begins at 11:30 am in the Johnson Athletics Center. Guests begin to arrive hours before the event, so we ask for volunteers between the hours of 8:30 am and 1:30 pm. We acknowledge that some may need to return to their departments for post-ceremony receptions; if you are available even for a portion of the day, please let us know. Questions? Please contact Traci Swartz.

Commencement

Commencement 2015 is Friday, June 5. Guest Services Volunteers for Commencement are indispensable to the event. They help guests to their seats, answer questions, entertain and inform, and maintain an enjoyable atmosphere for the family and friends of our graduates.

Volunteers for guest services attend a training session earlier in the week, and the time commitment on Commencement Day is from about 6:30 am until the Exercises are over. Breakfast and lunch are provided to volunteers. Students, please note: undergraduates who fulfill the volunteer commitment for Commencement are given free housing until Saturday, June 6. Sign up! Recruit some friends! Our guests especially love to visit with MIT students.

Thank you – We hope to see you in June.
