The Committee on Nominations

The Committee on Nominations at MIT is charged with nominating faculty for membership in the Standing Faculty Committees and for Faculty Officers (Chair of the Faculty, Associate Chair of the Faculty and Secretary of the Faculty). The final selection is made in yearly basis by the MIT Faculty through a vote at the May Faculty Meeting. In addition, the Committee on Nominations is empowered to appoint faculty to fill out-of-cycle vacancies in these Committees and among the Faculty Officers.

Faculty play a key role in major policy decisions and in setting the tone and personality of MIT as an institution. Faculty governance at MIT takes place in part by participating in Standing Faculty Committees and by serving as Faculty Officers. By nominating qualified candidates for these positions, the Committee on Nominations contributes to the shared governance tradition of MIT.

The Committee on Nominations consists of seven Faculty members appointed by the President, each member to serve for a three-year term. At least two new members are appointed each year. The President designates the Chair from among the membership.  The election process and charge to the committee are defined in the Rules and Regulations of the Faculty.
