Senior Leadership

President: Susan Hockfield

Chancellor: Phillip Clay

The Chancellor has oversight responsibility for graduate and undergraduate education at MIT, student life, and student services. The Chancellor is responsible for strategic planning and oversight of the Institute's large-scale international partnerships.

Dean for Graduate Education: Steven Lerman

The role of the Dean for Graduate Students is to provide a senior voice on behalf of graduate student issues and concerns and to work with the Graduate Student Council to articulate relevant matters to senior administration.

Dean for Undergraduate Education: Daniel Hastings

The role of the Dean for Undergraduate Education is to support and enhance integrated student learning both inside and outside the classroom. This encompasses student-focused as well as faculty-focused educational initiatives throughout the Institute.

Dean for Student Life: Larry Benedict

The Dean for Student Life has responsibility for the direction and oversight of MIT's core student support services, in addition to programs that enrich community life.

Provost: L. Rafael Reif

The Provost shares responsibility with the President, the Chancellor, and the academic deans for supervision of the educational and research programs of MIT. The Provost is the chief academic officer of the Institute with responsibility for budgeting and planning of these programs. The Provost, working with the Executive Vice President and Treasurer, also has responsibility for coordinating the budgeting and capital planning of the Institute.

Dean, School of Architecture and Planning: Adele Naude Santos

The School of Architecture and Planning is committed to sustaining and enhancing the quality of the human environment at all scales, from the personal to the global. It values design excellence, technological inventiveness, and imaginative scholarship. And it believes that design and policy interventions should be grounded in unwavering commitment to equity, social justice, and making a positive difference in the everyday lives of real people.

Dean, School of Engineering: Subra Suresh

Having as its overarching theme leadership through technical excellence and innovation, MIT's School of Engineering develops innovative technologies, thinking, and practice. It provides engineering education and undertakes engineering research that together serve to develop creative technological leaders and advance the frontiers of engineering knowledge. It is recognized as the premier academic institution in engineering.

Dean, School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences: Deborah Fitzgerald

The School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences offers students the chance to explore creative expressions of the human imagination; to understand the human past; and to examine social, economic, and political change over time and the cultural and institutional contexts in which science and technology are rooted.

Dean, School of Science: Marc Kastner

The School of Science plays a worldwide leadership role in education and research through its dedication to the advancement of scientific knowledge and the education of students on the constantly evolving frontiers of science. The Dean provides leadership to the School, striving to recruit exceptionally talented young researchers and educators, and is a strong supporter of innovative instructional techniques designed to improve the delivery of science education to students.

Dean, Sloan School of Management: David Schmittlein

The Sloan School of Management is widely acknowledged as a leader in management education and research. The Dean leads the formulation and implementation of strategy for maintaining this position and works with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and recruiters on a wide range of issues, including entrepreneurship, educational technology and distance learning, and international partnerships.

Vice President for Research and Associate Provost: Claude Canizares

The Vice President for Research has overall responsibility for research activity and policy at the Institute.  He oversees more than a dozen interdisciplinary research laboratories and centers, including MIT's Lincoln Laboratory, the Broad Institute, the Plasma Science and Fusion Center, the Research Laboratory of Electronics, the Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies, the Francis Bitter Magnet Laboratory, Haystack Observatory, and the Division of Health Sciences and Technology.

Director, Lincoln Laboratory: Eric Evans

The Director of Lincoln Laboratory is the chief operating officer of a mission-oriented, multidisciplinary laboratory operated by MIT for the Department of Defense (DoD). As MIT's largest facility, with a diverse workforce of 2,400 employees (including 1,400 technical professionals), Lincoln Laboratory focuses on sensors, information extraction, and communications.

Associate Provost for Faculty Equity: Wesley Harris

Associate Provost Harris works on faculty diversity and gender issues across the Institute, including the recruitment, retention, promotion, and career development of minority and women faculty.

Associate Provost: Philip S. Khoury

Associate Provost Khoury is responsible for overseeing MIT's noncurricular arts programs and initiatives, including the MIT Museum and the List Visual Arts Center; MIT's strategic planning for international education and research; and MIT's efforts to promote the public understanding of science and technology. He is also responsible for the enhancement of existing activities and the creation of new opportunities at the intersections of MIT's five schools.

Associate Provost for Faculty Equity: Barbara Liskov

Associate Provost Liskov works on faculty diversity and gender issues across the Institute, including the recruitment, retention, promotion, and career development of minority and women faculty.

Associate Provost: Martin Schmidt

Associate Provost Schmidt assists the Provost in academic administration, with primary responsibilities for academic and space planning, and for oversight of faculty affairs, including faculty development and grievances.

Director, MIT Libraries: Ann Wolpert

The Director of the Libraries is responsible for the MIT Libraries and MIT Press. The MIT Libraries include five major collections, a number of smaller branch libraries in specialized subject areas, a fee-for-services group, and the Institute Archives. MIT Press is widely recognized for its innovative graphic design, electronic publishing initiatives, and the more than 200 new books and 40 journals that it publishes each year in fields related to science and technology.

Executive Vice President and Treasurer: Theresa Stone

The Executive Vice President and Treasurer is the Institute's chief fiduciary officer, responsible for leading all of the administrative and financial functions at MIT. She works with the President, the Corporation, and members of MIT's senior leadership team to ensure that MIT's financial, capital, and operational resources are optimally deployed in a manner that supports the Institute's academic mission of education and research.

Vice President for Institute Affairs and Corporation Secretary: Kirk Kolenbrander

The Vice President for Institute Affairs and Secretary of the Corporation is responsible for MIT's internal communication and coordination of policy issues with the senior administration and the trustees of the Corporation. He provides direct support to the President on communications and relations with internal constituencies; coordinates activities and communication among senior staff; and advises the President on policy issues.

Vice President for Resource Development: Jeffrey Newton

The Vice President for Resource Development is responsible for seeking private support for the Institute from individuals, corporations, and foundations. He oversees the planning, development, and implementation of all aspects of the fundraising process.

Vice President and General Counsel: R. Gregory Morgan

The Vice President and General Counsel is MIT's chief legal officer, responsible for shaping the Institute's approach to legal and regulatory affairs. The Office of the General Counsel is MIT's internal law office, providing legal advice, counseling, and service to MIT and representing the Institute on all legal matters arising out of the activities of MIT.

Vice President for Human Resources and Equal Opportunity Officer: Alison Alden

The Vice President for Human Resources is responsible for the policies and programs that affect employees and their experience of work at the Institute. The Vice President for Human Resources also serves as the Institute's Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity officer.

Vice President for Information Services and Technology: Jerrold Grochow

The Vice President for Information Services and Technology is MIT's senior information technology officer and head of the central IT organization on campus. He is responsible for ensuring that MIT's IT resources are aligned with the strategic priorities of the Institute, and that IT services are consistent, reliable, easy to use, and cost efficient.

Note on the reporting relationships

Also reporting to the President are the Executive Vice President of the Alumni Association and the President of the MIT Investment Management Company. These relationships are shown on the Corporation and Institutional Officers chart.

Lincoln Laboratory is a federally sponsored research and development center, off campus. Its Director reports to the Provost through the Vice President for Research and Associate Provost.
