MIT communications workshops
select MIT staff presentation

10 February 2005

Publishing Services Bureau hosted this online workshop sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Two former colleagues -- John Fritz, director of new media learning and development at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County's Office of Information Technology, and Charlie Melichar, director of media relations at Colgate University -- shared how they approach web development at their campuses in the age of personalization.

Five years ago, it was enough to establish a presence on the web for people who didn’t know a specific college or university. Now everyone’s talking about the user experience. Can students register online, view grades, and pay bills? Soon, if not already, sites will be expected to support online communities, where users can connect with each other for teaching and learning, ad hoc work teams, employee communications, and more. Increasingly, how current students, faculty, and staff are supported through a campus portal or intranet is influencing what external users are shown on the web.

The workshop covered desirable portal features, the value of blogs and e-newsletters, how to evaluate content management systems, and the importance of tracking statistics.
