Joseph F. Coughlin, PhD is founder and Director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab. Based within MIT’s Engineering Systems Division, AgeLab is the first multi-disciplinary research program created to understand the behavior of older adults; the role of technology; and, the opportunity for innovations to improve quality of life throughout the lifespan. His research focuses on how the convergence of baby boomer expectations and technology will drive change in public policy and business. Dr. Coughlin is one of Fast Company Magazine’s ‘100 Most Creative People in Business’ and was named by the Wall Street Journal as one of ‘12 Pioneers shaping the future of aging and how we will all live, work, and play tomorrow,’ his work has been featured in the New York Times, The Economist, CNN, Business Week, BBC, Asia News, Fortune, Wired, Época, and many other media outlets. Dr. Coughlin speaks, consults and collaborates with governments and businesses worldwide. He leads the New England University Transportation Center within MIT’s Center for Transportation & Logistics and teaches public policy and management in MIT’s Engineering Systems Division.
