Leave of Absence Information for Undergraduates at MIT

A Leave of Absence is arranged through the Office of Student Support Services, located in 5-104 (253-4861).

Please make an appointment with a counseling dean if you are considering taking a Leave of Absence.

STUDENTS ON A LEAVE OF ABSENCE SHOULD NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

If you have received students loans you MUST contact Student and Parent Loans before leaving MIT (11-120, 253-3343).

You will not be eligible for MIT`s hospitalization insurance during your time away. Be sure to make other arrangements for insurance coverage. You may contact the Student Health Insurance Office (E23-308, 253-4371) for more information.

International students should be in touch with the International Students Office (5-133, 253-3795) regarding their visa status.

If you receive financial aid you should be in touch with Student Financial Aid (11-320, 253-4971).

HOW TO REACTIVATE STUDENT STATUS AFTER A LEAVE OF ABSENCE

Students on a Leave of Absence have interrupted their registration and must have their student status officially reactivated by a Counseling Dean in Student Support Services. Otherwise, the student will not be able to register. You are encouraged to make an appointment with one of the Counseling Deans if you have specific questions about your return, or if you would simply like to talk to someone about your re-entry to MIT.

To reactivate your student status, fill out the "Request to Reactivate Student Status After a Leave of Absence" form available in 5-104, and return it to Student Support Services.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION RELATIVE TO A STUDENT`S RETURN:

IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTACT ALL APPROPRIATE OFFICES REGARDING YOUR INTENTION TO RETURN.
