In conclusion, we have demonstrated that SLs, particularly glyco-SLs, are involved in the
formation or stabilization of axonal branches in cultured hippocampal neurons. We are currently
examining the levels and types of SLs synthesized during development, and their targeting to axonal
or dendritic domains, in order to distinguish between the various possible molecular mechanisms that
could account for these effects.
