COMMUNICATION AND THE EMPOWERMENT OF CIVIL SOCIETY IN AFRICA
lOTH BIENNIAL CONFERENCE, Cape Town, November 15 - 22.

It is anticipated that about 200 professionals from all regions of
Africa and the world will attend the conference. A special delegation
of U.S.-based scholars and development experts has been planned for.

The main sub-themes of the conference are follows:

Working Group No.l -Communication and Empowerment of Civil Society
(NGOs, Trade Unions, the Church, and Pro-Democracy Groups etc)

Working Group No.2 -Communication and Human Rights (Ethnic
Conflicts, Wars, Peace and Justice)

Working Group No.3 -Communication and Gender Issues (Men, Women,
Children, and Gender Inequality)

Working Group No.4 -Communication, Civil Society and the State
(Evolution and Sustenance of Multi-partyism and Media Pluralism).

Working Group No.5 - Communication Research and Civil Society
(Research Tradition, Methods and Application of Results).

Working Group No.6 -Communication, Global Partnership, and
Interdependence (International Currents).

Working Group No 7 -Communication Training, Ethics and Education for
Civil Society(Curricula and Ethical Standards, Content and
Instructional Methods and Materials, Media Education and Technology).

Working Group No.8- AFRICA COMNET Information for Empowerment of
Civil Society (Information Sources, Documentation, Management and
Information Systems).

Working Group No.9 - Communication, Culture and Environment
(Cultural Practices, Environmental Education, and Empowerment of
Civil Society).

Working Group No.10 - Civil Society and Church Organizantions.
