The 1997 ALA conference will be held at the Kellogg Center at
Michigan State University. It will focus on recent developments
in African film, although papers on literature will be welcomed
as usual. Plenary sessions will feature African and African
American filmmakers, writers and critics, including Assia Djebar,
Gaston Kabore, Tsitsi Dangarembga, Flora M'mbugu-Schelling, Bassek
Ba Kobhio, Ngozi Onwurah, Francois Woukouache, Manthia Diawara,
Trin T. Minh-ha, Charles Burnett, Salim Mekuria, John Akomfrah, and
others. Workshop topics include anthropology and film, the teaching
of African film, history and film, and, of course, literature and
film. Our special nights we call FESPACO and CARTHAGE nights in
honor of the African film festivals held biannually. This is our
modest attempt to provide the ALA with a film festival...in
Michigan.
