Assignment One

Crimescene

The first web-based story site I inspected was the Crime Scene website. This website invites the user to inspect the evedence related to a fictional crimne, and then participate with other users by posting comments and voting for the suspect that you believe to be guilty. Over all the segmentation was not bad, but there were a few things that bothered me.

First of all, each crime is based around a front page, with a set of links to various types of evidence. Each linked page in turn has links to various pieces of evidence. This leads to a tree stuctrure that the user must traverse in order to examine all of the evidence. I would have prefered to see a more complex structure that allowed more cross referencing between lexia.

On the other hand, most lexia were well sized, and minimal scrolling was required. With a maximized browser, pages such as this one required no scrolling.

Mass Transit

Mass Transit by Freedom Baird was graphically well layed out and as a whole well segmented. Each lexia was small enough to fit on a single screen and the text was written in a style that was engaging and informal. The images that corresponded to each piece to text add nice accents. There were generally several links per lexia, and I was easilly drawn from one lexia to another. Another nice feature was the map on the left of the screen that allows the user to switch locations if there are no links within the text that interest him.

The Girl and the Wolf"

The Girl and the Wolf" is a 3 by 3 story on two variables, allowing the reader to adjust the levels of sex and violence in the story. The reader may select any one of nine lexia containing a different version of the same story. The text of each lexia will fit on a maximized browser, but the page seems cramped. There is a paragraph break between each line or two, giving the text a jerky feel. Each story may have been better suited to several lexia a piece, leading to a less cramped feel.
