Interactive and Non-Linear Narrative: Theory and Practice

Assignment 1

Crime Scene Evidence File

Comment:

The key feature of this site is that it allows you to play detective. I like the idea they don't direct you as a story too much but just put information up. The fact that they don't put all the information up at one time is good too. The reader is forced to solve the case by asking questions or going on hunches. I think the chat area where you get to interrogate suspects/witness is a good idea too.

The fly

The stories on this site didn't really seem to mess together well. It actually seemed like a disorganized mess. On the navigation side, I did like the fact that I was able to follow a story to the end if I like that particular story or if not, I could follow his predefined jumps.

SPQR

Comment:

A online mystery that just keeps going and going and going. This site used to be part of Time Warner's Pathfinder site but now it is on it own. I love the world that it sets up and the mission that it puts you on. The navigation is both good and bad. I like the fact that you can get lost in the many different areas but there is a little bit of inconsistencies. Sometimes, a turn to the left will make you turn 90 degrees to the left. Sometimes less than that and sometimes even 180 degrees if there is nothing "interesting" on the side of you. I like the help that pick up along the way, which is in the form of scrolls. The bad thing about this web site is that their idea of a screen is too big for my computer screen so I spend alot of time scrolling up and down to see the rest of the information. Also it takes a little while to jump from page to page.
