Still inside a small, closed container, I am removed from my resting place and jostled again as I swing through the air while clutched to someone. My journey slows, and I again find stable ground.

Clicking noises, ringing noises, and a multitude of hushed conversations in the room. Soon the voice of my transport becomes clear above the murmer.

Hi there Bob, how're you today?

Couldn't be better! But Cheryl, isn't it your birthday today?

Yes, it is. This is something from Derrick... I haven't opened it yet. And I can't now or I'll be late to my lecture.

What's on today's agenda?

I'm speaking about the fall of Pompeii. Pretty interesting business. So long ago, and we can see into the lives of the ancient Romans by looking at their preserved art, homes, and even themselves. A fascinating subject! I'm also very glad that our department has access to the current research.

Right! Well, I'll let you go. Good luck, and hey, happy birthday!

Thanks Bob. See you later.

Her footsteps fade from my presence. A ringing noise nearby, and then the male voice again:

Brown University department of archeology, Bob Waters. What can I do for you?
