Simple literature searching

Use computer-aided library resources (Barton, FirstSearch) to prepare a brief (10 - 20 citations) literature survey of one of the following areas:

• A research topic in materials science or engineering, such as those currently active in DMSE (preferred over topics below).
• A controversial biomedical materials application; e.g.
  • Olefin vs. polyamide tails strings on intrauterine devices
  • Silicone elastomers and gels in breast implants
  • Fluorocarbon jaw implants
• The technical and economic future of advanced composite materials in commercial aircraft
• The current status and future prospects of materials for "high-temperature" superconductivity
• The current status and future prospects for ceramic materials in automobiles
• The economic nature of the "running-out-of-landfills" concern and the role of plastics in this problem.
• The need for materials manufacturers (pick a material) to adopt methods that are more benign to the environment

Copy the literature citations into an emacs window as you find them. Then edit and print this file, and turn it in (with the group signatures) on 2/20.

Save this file - we'll expand on it with more advanced searching methods, and we'll also use it to prepare a research proposal.
