INVITATION TO ALL INTERESTED PARTIES In case you hadn't noticed, a new age in networking has started. Information Super Highway and MultiMedia are buzzwords that make the newspapers every day. The Internet and associated research networks have been designated by the US Vice President Al Gore as: "The prototype of the future in networking". To make sure that research networks and associated networks in Europe keep that leading edge, and that we develop, test and implement applications and services that can evolve into the European Information Super Highway, it is essential that ongoing network developments in Europe are coordinated. The Rare Technical Committee (RTC) aims at establishing a set of pan European co-ordination projects, building upon existing and future national/network/organizational initiatives and involving industry. These coordination projects will hopefully promote the advancement of interworking new applications and services in European networking. It is intended that these projects will also be submitted as proposals to the EC as a response to a call for proposals for Telematics for Research (part of the 4th Framework programme) to apply for matching funding. This plenary meeting is meant as a kick-off for this RTC initiative. Several people will share their views on this initiative, and how it ties in with the European Commissions 4th Framework initiative. After these short presentations there will be a discussion with all attendees on the feasibility of this initiative and on a possible structure for the coordination projects.
