Lighter Than Air (LTA) Vehicle Design Rules and Objectives

Objective

The objective of the design contest is to traverse a specified course in the minimum amount of time with the maximum amount of payload. The winner will be judged on the mass of payload brought through the course per unit time (mass/time).

The Race

The race will be held in Rockwell Cage at a time to be specified in class. There will also be race trials in Rockwell Cage one week before the race. The course consists of:

A whistle will be sounded 2 minutes before the race begins. The race will be started with a whistle. Any vehicles in front of the starting line before the start will be required to cross the starting line again before it can participate in the race.

Vehicle Constraints

Gross mass of the trimmed craft cannot exceed 1.5 Kg. (assessed on the race trial day and again on race day)

Any team not displaying good sportsmanship will be disqualified. Most rules of sailing apply.

Logistics

Tables have been reserved in the basement of building 33 in the Aero Projects laboratory which is open from 9-5 M-F. You must first attend the Safety Lecture before doing ANY work in the Aero Projects laboratory. The Laboratory coordinator is:
