Established in 1995, this program is part of MIT's effort to recognize and enhance the contributions of minority scholars on campus. Appointments are for a duration of between one term and two academic years and are initiated by academic units. Selections are based on candidates' professional achievements and their potential for significant contribution to the intellectual life of MIT.-

Physics Department
The Physics department takes extra measures to support its minority graduate students, including designating a faculty member as minority-student advisor to monitor the progress and well-being of the students throughout their MIT experience. In addition, the department offers financial support to all underrepresented minority applicants who meet the standards for admission; support is guaranteed for up to five years if the student remains in good standing.Robert Taylor Professorship
The Robert Taylor Professorship was announced in February 1994 and created to honor MIT's first African American graduate, Robert Taylor, Class of 1892. Professor Marcus A. Thompson of Music and Theatre Arts currently holds the chair.
