Fundamentals of Sustainability: LEED

Course Overview
As sustainability and green building design move from being on the periphery to the mainstream of real estate development, a solid understanding of LEED standards becomes more important to industry professionals. This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge needed to understand the fundamentals of LEED.
The course will begin by presenting participants with an overview of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System before moving into providing examples of LEED in commercial, residential, and institutional real estate projects. During the afternoon session, participants will visit a local LEED Gold certified site and hear from developers, energy consultants, and commissioning agents through a panel discussion.
Course Objectives
- Understand the terminology and components of LEED certification for new projects and existing buildings
- Identify the general issues associated with evaluating financial feasibility
- Explore examples and techniques for LEED Certification across various project types
- Discuss “Lessons Learned” from the development community
Companion Course
Sustainable Real Estate Development is designed to follow this course, affording participants the opportunity to explore more fully the current direction of sustainable development in real estate.

This course is aimed at anyone in real estate interested in learning more about LEED.
Instructor
Nancy Ludwig is President and Senior Principal of ICON architecture in Boston where she is a registered architect and practicing LEED Accredited Professional. Ms. Ludwig's LEED projects include, Maverick Landing, New Construction certified, and Salem State College Central Campus, Existing Building certified. She is currently involved in master planning of Lowell Hamilton Canal, a 15-acre mixed-use district, to meet LEED Neighborhood Development standards, and Washington Beech HOPE VI housing to meet LEED for Housing and Midrise (pilot) silver certification.
Registration + Fees
Course Fee: $750.
Green Series Fee: $2000 (10% discount). The Green Series includes enrollment in Sustainable Real Estate Development and Sustainability Fundamentals: LEED.
The program fee covers tuition, course reader, continental breakfast, and light refreshments. Registration and payment must be made at least one week prior to the course start date. Course information, including the reader, will be made available once payment is received.
