Innovations in Real Estate Development
March 24-25
Course Overview
The complex challenges of real estate development require creative real world solutions. This course is designed to provide participants with an introduction to significant areas of innovation in the field.
Form Based Code. Increasingly cities are rethinking urban planning and looking for models which offer greater flexibility. By focusing less on land use and more on creating a specific urban structural landscape, form based code seeks to achieve a built environment which adheres to a form and scale consistent with successful urbanization. Steve Heikin, Partner at ICON architecture will bring his experience with Form Based Code in Lowell, Massachusetts to this section.
Real Options in Real Estate Development. The forward-looking ideas embodied in “real options theory” provide developers with the option of contracting, growing, or sitting pat with a development project. Leading this session will be MIT professor David Geltner who is working to apply the options methodology to the development process in an effort to create greater flexibility for projects.
Life Care Development. Assisted living developments epitomize the need for flexibility. Given technological advances within healthcare, the future direction of this industry is unknown. This session provides participants with the opportunity to examine an innovative business model for a growing segment of the population and to apply some of the innovations described in earlier segments of the class. Alison Carnduff, Senior Vice President, with Benchmark Assisted Living will lead this discussion.
