Assisted Living: Today

Course Overview
Agile environments that can change over time in response to a person’s physical and cognitive progression are an essential consideration when developing housing for an aging population. Assisted Living: Today will look at the current profile of the assisted living industry. The course will address the evolution of assisted living, determining market demand and financial feasibility for this product, customer segmentation and programming, and design and development feasibility.
The course may be taken by itself or in conjunction with Assisted Living: Tomorrow which will be offered on Friday, October 30.
Course content will be delivered through lectures, interactive case studies, and industry guest speakers. Reading materials will be sent in advance for attendees to prepare.
Course Objectives
- Identify key components of an assisted living development
- Be able to articulate how assisted living differs from other real estate asset classes
- Understand the “new face” of the older customer
Who Should Attend
Students who are interested in learning more about the creation of assisted living projects should attend the class. Prior development knowledge is not a pre-requisite, but may be helpful. The course is intended to be interactive in nature.
Instructors
Alison Carnduff is a Senior Vice President of Investments with Benchmark Assisted Living. She leads and oversees a broad range of investment activities including acquisitions, recapitalizations, industry and market research, development activities and equity marketing. She assists the company’s development of strategic goals and objectives and has over 15 years of professional experience in real estate development, lending, and acquisitions in the areas of senior housing, multifamily housing, and specialized institutional development.
Gerard Frank is a founding Partner, and President, of Bechtel Frank Erickson Architects. In 1992, Mr. Frank served as Partner in Charge for numerous senior living communities, including: the Hampshire College Veridian Village Life-long Residential Community in Amherst, MA; the Arbor Rose Residence at Jerome Home in New Britain, CT; Crescent Point in Niantic, CT; Orchard Valley in Wilbraham, MA; and several centers dedicated to Alzheimer’s Disease and other Dementia Care needs. He is currently involved with research and lectures on the subject of environmental modifications and nursing home design with particular emphasis on care for individuals afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease, including lectures at Brown University, Harvard Medical School, and Boston University School of Public Health.
Kent Larson is a principal research scientist in MIT's School of Architecture and Planning. He is director of the Changing Places research group and the MIT Open Source Building Alliance. Larson has practiced architecture since 1981; and Architectural Digest selected his firm as one of the 100 architects for residential design. Kent’s designs have won numerous awards, including the AIA Award for the design of the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University. His MIT research project, "The Unbuilt," which created hyper-realistic simulations of the 20th century's visionary architecture, was included in "The End of the Century," which opened in Tokyo in 1998 and traveled to South America, Europe and the United States through 2001.

Course Fee:$750.
Assisted Living Series Fee:$1350 (10% discount). The Assisted Living Series includes enrollment in Assisted Living: Tomorrow which is being offered Friday, October 30.
October Series Fee:$3825 (10% discount). The October Series includes enrollment in Fundamentals of Loan Workouts, Advanced Real Estate Finance, and Assisted Living: Tomorrow.
