Cornerstone Course

Sustainable Real Estate Development

June 23-24

Course Overview

This course is designed to give participants an overview of the state of sustainable development today with a focus on crafting green strategies and performance goals.  To give a level of hands-on experience, the last session of the course will be devoted to a sustainable development charrette, allowing participants to synthesize the material presented during the course.

The course begins with a survey of current green development in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.  Sustainable strategies and performance goals, including the most widely used green building rating system (LEED) in the U.S., will be discussed.  Selected case studies will be used to illustrate the tools, development, approval processes, and financial projections in urban, suburban, and land development scenarios.

The course also highlights some emerging strategies, such as biophilic design, net-zero energy, complete water cycles, and engaged offsets for carbon markets. The last session of the course is devoted to a green development charrette in which a real site will be simulated to encourage group discussions and to further synthesize the material covered earlier.

Course Objectives
