MSRED Thesis Research
Master of Science in Real Estate Development (MSRED) students are required to write a thesis. The thesis provides students with an opportunity to integrate and apply the areas of knowledge acquired in course work in a substantial written report, equivalent in weight to one full course. Students may choose to take part in Center research projects, to identify a topic of their own, or to select a research proposal offered by a CRE industry partner.
A thesis seminar offered during the spring term describes faculty research interests and explains quantitative and qualitative methodologies to help students explore possible topics. Thesis topics and work plans are finalized by the end of the spring term. The writing of the thesis and thesis research, which may include interviews, statistical analysis, and project evaluations, as well as literature reviews, are accomplished over the summer term.

Proposing Topics and Sponsoring a Thesis
The Center for Real Estate seeks proposed topics for student thesis research. CRE industry partners and alumni organizations can also sponsor a thesis.
The master’s thesis is typically 60-100 pages in length, a tightly focused piece of research which must be completed in only three months. Theses can use corporate data, but should involve issues of general interest to the industry. Past theses have included academic topics, pedagogical topics, case studies, and feasibility analyses.
Topic proposals should be about a page in length, and contain a clear question or problem, proposed methodology, and an estimate of the support you can provide for the student. Proposals are received by early March in order to be reviewed and considered by the faculty for that year’s students for thesis work over the summer. Please send your proposals to Maria Vieira, Associate Director of Education, 617-258-5672 (phone), firstname.lastname@example.org, or fax to: 617-258-6991.
