COMM Committee 4-6 Note: See below for committee code ID ICPSR identification number 7-11 NAME Name 12-36 CHAIR Chair 37-38 This variable indicates the chair(s) of a committee during a session. Note that in some sessions a chair departs a committee without a replacement being designated. In such cases, there may be a designation of a "first chair" without the identification of subsequent chairs. The codes are as follows: 0: Never chaired during session 11: Only chair during the session 12: First of multiple chairs 13: Second chair in the session 14: Third chair in the sessio PTYSTAT Party status 39 This variable distinguishes between original appointees to committees and those appointed during a Congress or session to fill a vacancy. The codes are as follows: 1: Original appointee 4: Additional member (expanded committee roster) 6: Replacement RANK Rank of member within party status 40-41 For this data set, this is the order on the committee list specified in the appointment resolution. STATE State (ICPSR) 42-43 ICPSR State code DIST District 44-45 Coded zero for the Senate data sets. Included for compatability with House data sets. PARTY Party 46-49 Political party, from Kenneth Martis, _Historical Atlas of Political Parties in the United States Congress, 1789--1989_. The numerical codes are consistent with Keith Poole's NOMINATE data sets. See below for the codes used in this data set. CSERV Committee service 50-51 Congresses of continuous service on the committee. Interruptions in service restart the counter. SENIOR Senate seniority 52-53 Congresses of service in the Senate. ISERV Interrupted service 54 Records whether a member's service on a committee was interrupted. The codes are as follows: 1: Temporary service on the committee 2: Only period of service on the committee 3: First period of interrupted service 4: Second period of interrupted service 5: Third period of interrupted service 6: Fourth period of interrupted service MOA Month appointed 55-56 DAA Day appointed 57-58 YEA Year appointed 59-62 Note: The three preceding variables together record the date on which the member was appointed to the committee. MOT Month terminated 63-64 DAT Day terminated 65-66 YET Year terminated 67-70 Note: The three preceding variables together record the date on which the member was termined from the committee. This is usually the end of the session, unless the member vacated the committee assignment before then.
